Today we’re discussing ruin techniques specifically for all you castle builders out there! Builds by @ranghaal @vikingbricks @steinmeanzachary and @markoffalworth on Instagram illustrate various ways to show castles in ruin. From long abandoned fortresses to battle-damaged walls, the most important part of creating realistic ruins in general is implying what used to be there. Picture the entire castle or building and take chunks out in an asymmetrical way so it doesn’t look too ordered—nature and battle are not ordered after all.
Despite ruins themselves implying decay, the builds are not unmoving. By varying brick sizes and textures, the build comes to life and keeps your eyes moving to try and discover all the details and the story embedded in the scene.
