We’re heading into the winter forest for this new review, as we look at the latest 3in1 set, the Forest Animals: Red Fox. This latest addition to the 3in1 animals line offers a red fox, a red squirrel and an owl sat in a tree, but how does it compare to previous animal sets?

Let’s take a walk on the wild side to find out, and let us know what you think in the comments!

Plate 1 x 1, x12, dark brown. SCORE: 4 out of 5 part selection The set includes many common and less common parts in Dark Orange and Medium Nougat colours, perfect for a classic orange fox build. The new 1x2 brick with a Technic pin is a great bonus and is vital for the build’s compact design!

The fox body uses a variety of hinges including the new brick with Technic joint (4920) to attach the legs to the body. The head build has a 1 brick wide slim muzzle and opening mouth, using a modified brick (67329) to attach the eyes. Wedges (35464) and spiked plates (15209) create a fur texture on the sides of the head.

TECHNIQUES: The back legs are made from three sections to create the angled shape. Each section uses locking hinges, and it also allows the fox to stand or sit. Wedges create the white tip of the fox tail and bracket plates are used for a SNOT build to add fur texture to the tail.

TECHNIQUES: A small mushroom and tree build are attached using Technic ball joints (32474). The mushroom uses a cone (11610) as the stalk. The tree trunk uses a round plate with bars (75937) at its centre and attaches plates on each side of it to create a varied design in the tree trunk.

TECHNIQUES: For the owl, the eyes are instead made from Technic ball joints (32474) and the beak is made from a tooth plate (49668). The squirrel’s front legs use tow ball joints, so the acorn can be held. The squirrel can also stand on all fours when it’s removed! Our score: 4 out of 5 techniques. The techniques on display are varied and help to create a realistic and textured design for the fox body. The techniques for the side build are a creative way to create a round shape.

ALTERNATE BUILDS: The squirrel is the smallest, but the tail shape is captured perfectly. Articulation with the arms allows the acorn to be placed in its arms, and the legs allow it to sit up, giving a variety of posing options. The owl stands on a small tree side build, and although it can be removed, it relies on the tree for balance. A lovely detail is the owl can turn its head 360 degrees! Modified 2x2 plates are used in layers to add a feathery texture!

ACCURACY: Our score: 5 out of 5 accuracy. All three of the builds are very accurate to their original animals, keeping mostly organic shapes and appearing more realistic. The use of Dark Orange is a perfect fit especially for the fox and squirrel builds. We believe the owl is based on the Tawny owl, but the shape and colours fit very well.

DISPLAY VALUE: Each animal has movable joints to allow for different poses, with the fox being the most expressive. Our score: 5 out of 5 display value. All three models are strong designs and could be featured as a main display. In terms of scale and detail, they’d fit very well alongside recent Creator 3in1 animals like 31129 Majestic Tiger and 31150 Safari Animals, or on display for fans of large animal builds.

VALUE FOR MONEY: Our score: 5 out of 5 The set has a price per part ratio of $0.07 per part, which is a very good price per part ratio for a set of this scale! Not every 3in1 set has three different models that can stand alone at this quality, so we believe this deserves a full score for Value for Money! What did you think of the review and this set?
