Today's technique is by Blake Baer and creates a colour gradient perfect for depicting water. It's often really hard to build accurate water into your MOCs, due to its transparency which shows depth.
The real trick beyond the whole thing is that the same colour transparent tiles are used, but the colour of the plates underneath are changed. Darker blues show deeper areas of water, while lighter blues show shallower areas. It must have taken a lot of work to get it to look this good but I think it's worth it!
What's elevates this model even further is the border Blake has created; he uses transparent plates, but slightly bends the shape created to form the circular border.
